Electronic Medical Record Data

Clinical data is captured in electronic systems that are used by physicians as an alternative to paper charts.  GE Medical Systems software is used by a growing number of physicians, many of whom contribute non-identifying data for research.   Data are available for more than 4 million lives, with an average retention of 2.7 years.  All patients are included, regardless of payor (Medicare, Medicaid, private insurers, self-paid).   Because this research data is from physician practices, hospital treatment is not included.  All research data are in formats that protect individual privacy and are HIPAA-compliant.

Key features are:

• Nearly real-time data

• Diagnosis history

• Prescriptions with the associated diagnosis

• Blood pressure, weight, height data

• Smoking status information

• Laboratory results for common conditions: cholesterol, diabetes
