"Open" Longitudinal Claims Databases

Compared to population databases of insured individuals,  ‘open’ databases have far more data that is more up-to-date.   The data come from a variety of sources including pharmacies, automated “switches” between service providers and payors, PBMs and national retail chains.  These include pharmacy sales, submitted (not adjudicated) linkable claims from hospitals, professional providers and pharmacies.

Unlike population databases, eligibility data are not available in open databases.  It is not possible to interpret the appearance or disappearance of individuals from the database, to establish a denominator or to calculate rates. There is no guarantee that  all claims are captured.

Health Data Services Corporation works with vendors like SDI (Surveillance Data Inc.), IMS and Verispan, a healthcare informatics joint venture of Quintiles Transnational Corp. and McKesson Corp. -- all familiar names to the market research community

SDI highlights:

  • 25-30% of all US electronic medical claims (AHIP found that 75% of all claims were electronic in 2006)

  • 50% of all US electronic retail pharmacy claims

  • Representative of US regional distribution

  • Some laboratory results

  • Cash and mail service purchases are not included

Verispan highlights:

  • 50% of all US pharmacy sales, including cash and mail order

  • 30% of all US medical claims

Open databases are best suited for confirmatory investigations covering large population segments and for new launches.
